Black Sheep Coffee ready to open new cafe in Oxford

11

The Black Sheep Coffee chain is getting ready to open a new coffee shop in Oxford soon.

It already has a cafe in George Street and is now preparing to open a second branch in the city centre, in the unit where Edinburgh Woollen Mill traded for many years before it shut.

In 2013, co-founders Gabriel Shohet and Eirik Holt decided to quit their jobs on the same day and ‘rid the world of average-tasting coffee’.

The George Street branch opened in 2019 when the chain had 29 branches across the capital and four in Manchester.

Black Sheep Coffee’s website said in 2019: “Combining a passion for coffee and a mission to take down the big corporate chains, Black Sheep have preserved the independence of the brand by harnessing support and funding from their own customers and those who believe in the values of the company.”

Sourcing the first specialty-grade 100 per cent Robusta coffee, the founders went against market trends and became the ‘Black Sheep’ of the coffee world, continuing that ethos throughout the brand.

Branches in the capital include those in Shoreditch, Goodge Street, Chancery Lane, Canary Wharf, and Bank.

A poster has gone up at the former woollen mill shop on the corner of St Aldates and High Street to say the new cafe is ‘coming soon’ and advises customers to #leavetheherd’.

The unit has been vacant since 2020, when the clothing business went into administration.

The entire unit will be stripped out and refitted, together with new signs.

An opening date for the new cafe has not yet been revealed.
